Guidelines for Applicants
Qualifications
A researcher must be 40 years old or younger in principle.
- Eligible researchers: From postdocs up to PIs with less than three years’ experience. No students.
- No restrictions on nationality or place of residence.
- No restriction on the field of study.
- Must be able to attend both days (29th and 30th), including the social gathering.

Selection Standards
- The research must have promising future prospects.
- The research idea must be creative and original.

Number of Presenters
Thirty to forty.

a) Application for making a presentation at 1st RIKEN SAKURA Symposium 2017 for Young Scientists 2017
b) Abstract, self-introduction (It should be no longer than one page in total. Your presentation title and abstract must be in English.)
Note: When you pass the screening, your presentation title and abstract will be open to the public. Please make sure that you apply for the materials that can be made public.

Method of Selection and Notification of Results
A selection committee consists of the reviewers listed below. The committee will screen and make decisions on the presenters/presentations. The symposium secretariat will inform applicants of selection results via email. (Currently scheduled for early January 2017.)
Presentation style will be advised by the committee, either Oral presentation + Poster presentation or Flash-talk + Poster presentation.
The selection committee members are as follows. The screening will be divided into two general fields of study, so please check the applicable category ("Life Science" or "Physics/Engineering").

Travel/Transportation Costs
To be paid in accordance with the RIKEN regulations.

For persons living overseas
  • Airplane tickets will be arranged through a travel agency designated by the symposium secretariat.
  • Local transportation expenses from the airport to RIKEN Yokohama will be paid based on the most economical route.
  • Full payment of return airfare requires arrival the day before the symposium and departure the day after with no stopovers en route. Only part of the travel costs will be covered if the participant has business at another institution before/after the symposium will result in only part of the travel costs. However, if the home institution or the other institution does not provide transportation expenses and the participant will disseminate the results of the RIKEN SAKURA Symposium 2017 at other institutions (university, conference, etc.) or hold a seminar at a RIKEN center, laboratory, etc., RIKEN may be able to pay the full return airfare. For such cases, please consult with the symposium secretariat at the time you receive notice that you have been selected to attend.

  • For participants living in Japan
  • Transportation expenses from the home institution or the participant’s home to RIKEN Yokohama will be paid based on the most economical route
  • Air travel is possible for persons outside Honshu. It is also possible for participants in Honshu if the cost of the air ticket is less than the cost of a Shinkansen ticket. Airplane tickets will be arranged through a travel agency designated by the symposium secretariat.

  • Accommodation Costs
    Accommodations will be arranged through a travel agency designated by the symposium secretariat.

    For participants living overseas
    The symposium will pay for a hotel room for the arriving night, day 1 and day 2 based on flight information.

    For participants living in Japan
    If the rail distance from the participant’s home to RIKEN Yokohama exceeds 50 kilometers, the symposium will pay for a hotel room for the arriving night and day 1 if the participant requests.

    Daily Allowance
    For participants living overseas
    A daily allowance will be paid for the attended symposium days as well as traveling days before and after. Note: This applies only to travel from your affiliated institution or home to RIKEN Yokohama.


    For participants living in Japan
    Paid only to participants whose affiliated institution or home is more than 50 kilometers from RIKEN Yokohama, as measured by railway distance.

    Reception Event
    A reception will be held after the completion of the day 1 of the symposium. Participants are asked to pay the 2,500 yen participation fee at the reception desk. Please note that we will collect a cancel fee for reception cancellations after March 14. Your understanding in this matter is greatly appreciated.
